The Beginning

How I started

Like so many people, I operated on auto-pilot mode for many years, juggling my career, family, and everything in between without recognizing signs of imbalances in my physical and mental health. I was learning to live with chronic stress. Over time, however, I could no longer ignore the effects of this hectic lifestyle on my health. Disturbed sleep, irritability, anxiety, and brain fog were symptoms that I dismissed too casually that affected my day-to-day life and overall well-being. I recognized something had to give and that my default way of operating was no longer working for me. I've been very fortunate to have the opportunity and the time to slow down, recalibrate, and change my career path in the process. My health journey and desire to live a healthier, more joyful life led me to Ayurveda, the ancient holistic medicine that has helped me to re-establish balance in my life and take control of my health. I know from personal experience the challenges of our day-to-day modern life, with all its demands on us, especially on working moms. As a wife and mother, I truly get it. It is a moment-by-moment and day-to-day practice to stay grounded and be well. We owe it to ourselves to find better ways of coping with life's stressors and to enjoy a better quality of life. We are meant to thrive, not just get by, in life. Ayurveda has shown me that this is very much attainable and that deep healing is possible if we commit to doing the work. I would love to share what I have learned with you as you go through your own healing and wellness journey.

Client testimonials

"This past spring I was diagnosed with covid-19. Not just a mild case but a severe case that included EVERY symptom associated with this deadly virus and more. I was literally crawling to my door to collect Instacart and care packages being delivered by my loved ones and crawling back to bed for weeks. I received a care package with specific diet instructions as well as some Ayurvedic herbs and teas that brought immediate relief to several symptoms including my dry cough and congestion. Over the course of a few days I went from barely being able to function enough to shower to an almost complete recovery. These herbs are life changing. I am forever grateful to Portia for quickly putting together this protocol to bring me back to good health."

"I have lived with gut issues and anxiety for a long time now and figured that's just how my life is going to be - just live with it - until a good friend recommended Portia and told me to give Ayurveda a try. I'm sure glad I did! Portia's knowledge, warmth and compassion comes through when you talk to her. For the first time in my life, I found a health practitioner who truly cares and genuinely wants me to heal and is giving me the tools so I can take charge of my own healing. She'll be the first to tell you she's only there to guide you. You have to do the work."

"Portia's advice helped me control my diabetes with diet and exercise alone. Let food be thy medicine, I'm proof. I went from almost 200 lbs. (I'm 5'8"!) to comfortably and consistently in the 160's. I couldn't have done that without her help and guidance in understanding my natural body constitution. It's science and spirit."

The moment you walk into Healthy Self Ayurveda's space, you immediately feel like you have found a sanctuary in the midst of the busy city.  This health clinic is filled with warmth, love, stillness, and healing.  This is the perfect setting to receive shiro dhara's from the Ayurvedic Practitioner.  In this treatment, I receive a warm healing oil drip on my forehead - calming my thoughts, anxiety and stress.  Special care is given here as I feel the nurturing energy and the attention to detail from my practitioner.  I HIGHLY recommend this practitioner as well as this healing space.
